About the Index
The Flat White Index exists for one reason: to celebrate the craft of the flat white, grow the conversation around specialty coffee, and — if we're honest — create a little healthy competition between the cafés that take it seriously.
Why we built this
Glasgow has an exceptional specialty coffee scene. Some of the best flat whites in the UK are being made in this city — but there's no dedicated place to celebrate that, debate it, or help people find them.
Google reviews are too broad. Instagram is too curated. Word of mouth is unreliable. We wanted something more rigorous, more specific, and more honest — built by coffee lovers, for coffee lovers.
The goal isn't to tear cafés down. It's to elevate the conversation. When people talk seriously about milk texture, espresso balance, and serving temperature, cafés get better. Prices stay honest. The whole scene benefits.
We started in Glasgow. But the flat white doesn't belong to one city. We're building this for everywhere it's taken seriously.
How we score
Every café is scored across six criteria. Each score is an average across multiple community reviews — not a single visit, not a single opinion. The overall Index Score reflects the complete flat white experience, not just the coffee itself.
Espresso
The foundation. Shot quality, extraction, flavour complexity. A weak espresso base ruins everything that follows.
Milk Texture
The microfoam. Silky, velvety, integrated. Not bubbly, not scalded, not an afterthought. This is where most cafés lose points.
Balance
The relationship between espresso and milk. Neither should dominate. The best flat whites taste like neither coffee nor milk alone.
Temperature
Served hot enough to enjoy slowly, cool enough not to scald. The Goldilocks problem of flat white making. More cafés fail this than you'd expect.
Presentation
How it arrives. Latte art is a bonus, not a requirement. Clean cup, correct ratio, no drips. First impressions matter.
Vibe
The intangible. Does this feel like a place that cares about coffee? Staff knowledge, atmosphere, the overall experience. You know it when you feel it.
Community driven
The Index is only as good as the people who contribute to it. Every score is a community average. Every review is a real person's real experience. We moderate for quality and fairness — single bad visits don't define a café, and we take context seriously.
