About the Index
The Flat White Index is an independent editorial guide to finding great flat whites in Glasgow. Honest scores. Real visits. No commercial relationships.
How this works
Every café on the Index is visited in person. Every flat white is ordered, paid for, and finished. Scores reflect the same six criteria, applied the same way, on every visit, by every reviewer.
No café has paid for placement. No score has been adjusted to soften a result. If the coffee improves, the score goes up. If it drops, the score drops.
Why this exists
Glasgow has an exceptional specialty coffee scene. Some of the best flat whites in the UK are being made here. But there was no dedicated place to keep track of that honestly, without the noise of crowd consensus or the distortion of commercial relationships.
Google reviews are too broad. Instagram is too curated. Word of mouth is too unreliable.
The goal is not to rank cafés for its own sake. It is to keep an honest record of quality. When people talk seriously about milk texture, espresso balance, and serving temperature, the whole scene benefits.
How we score
Every café is assessed across six criteria. Scores reflect multiple visits, not a single opinion. The overall score represents the complete flat white experience, not just the coffee itself.
Espresso
The foundation. Shot quality, extraction, flavour complexity. A weak espresso base ruins everything that follows.
Milk Texture
The microfoam. Silky, velvety, integrated. Not bubbly, not scalded, not an afterthought. This is where most cafés lose points.
Balance
The relationship between espresso and milk. Neither should dominate. The best flat whites taste like neither coffee nor milk alone.
Temperature
Served hot enough to enjoy slowly, cool enough not to scald. The Goldilocks problem of flat white making. More cafés fail this than you'd expect.
Presentation
How it arrives. Latte art is a bonus, not a requirement. Clean cup, correct ratio, no drips. First impressions matter.
Character
Every café worth visiting has something you can't quite name but always notice. An identity entirely its own. Scored on atmosphere, sense of care, and how memorable and considered the overall experience feels.
Community reviews
The Index is editorially led. Community reviews are welcome and published alongside editorial assessments. They add context and other perspectives. They do not replace or average with the editorial score.
If you've visited a café on the Index and want to add your verdict, submit a review.
For café owners
If you're listed here, this is an honest assessment of your flat white on the day it was ordered. Not a verdict on your business.
Scores can change. If the coffee improves, the score does too. If something is factually wrong, get in touch.
